Scions Sound is a body of water in north-central Khorvaire that forms a natural border between the nations of Aundair and Thrane to its west, and Karrnath to its east. It also serves as the northern border of the Mournland.[citation needed]

Geography[]

Scions Sound resembles a five-pronged star that is fed by the Aundair, Brey, Cyre, Karrn, and Thrane Rivers. The fifth prong forms a narrow channel with cliffs on both sides that leads northward to the Bitter Sea.[1] At the mouth of this channel is the windswept island of Stormhome, which has been magically altered to be an island paradise by House Lyrandar.[2][3]

At the center of Scions Sound lies a large island holding the city of Throneport and the castle of Thronehold, the traditional capital of the Kings of Galifar.[4][5][6]

The weather in the Sound is traditionally very stormy, with the exception of the island of Stormhome, where House Lyrandar keeps storms at bay.[3][7]

History[]

Most of the human nations that would eventually form the Five Nations and unite under the rule of Galifar I formed on the banks of Scions Sound, with the exception of Breland.[8] The capital cities of Flamekeep, Korth, and Aundair's former capital of Thaliost all border on Scions Sound, reflecting this origin.[citation needed]

When Galifar I established the Kingdom of Galifar, he chose to build his castle on the island at the center of Scions Sound to avoid an appearance of favoritism between the Five Nations.[5] During the time of the Kingdom of Galifar, Scions Sound was regularly used by ships carrying commerce and the White Arch Bridge was built across the Sound to connect the cities of Thaliost and Rekkenmark.[citation needed]

After the Last War began, Scions Sound was a major location for naval battles, particularly between the nations of Aundair and Karrnath.[9][10] During one of these battles, the White Arch Bridge was destroyed, severing the one land connection between Aundair and Karrnath.[10][11]

In 996 YK, the Treaty of Thronehold established Scions Sound as the border between Aundair and Karrnath. Today, the navies of these two countries continue to patrol Scions Sound, and both countries keep their side of the Sound heavily guarded.[12]
