A plague brush is a monstrous plant creature that is quite simply an enormous tumbleweed.[2] An extraplanar variety is found in Dolurrh, the Realm of the Dead,[1] while a native variety was created in the Last War and can be found in the Mournland.[2][note 1]

Description[]

They are massive balls of vines that grow to the size of a building, most being some 35 feet (11 meters) and the most massive weighing up to 40 tons (36,000 kilograms). However, its volume is mostly empty space, with relatively little plant matter in the form of vines making up the rest.[2]

Behavior[]

The single instinct of the plague brush is to roll over things, crush them, and kill them. However, it isn't very accurate, nor thorough—it might roll over some unfortunate, then forget them entirely. A plague brush is as likely to roll through a camp or settlement and continue on its way as it is to barrel through and destroy all in its path.[2]

Combat[]

A plague brush attacks by rolling into something or over something, and it does both with devastating force. Worse, those it rolls over risk being caught in the vines, scooped up, and taken away with it. Any creature smaller than the gigantic plague brush can be caught inside, to be steadily crushed and presumably consumed.[2]

As it is mostly empty space and it is always rolling over, it is exceedingly difficulty to attack a plague brush effectively. Any piercing weapon or projectile, like a spear or arrow has a chance of missing, simply going right through the plague brush without damaging it.[2]

Abilities[]

The plague brush is constantly enveloped by a cloud of spores, to a radius of 30 feet (9.1 meters).[note 2] If inhaled, they cause a virulent wasting disease called "greensickness" that drastically deteriorates one's strength and their health.[2][note 3]

History[]

Plague brushes were created during the Last War and served as advance units that would weaken enemy soldiers with the greensickness.[2]

Now, they roam randomly across the Mournland, and are a great hazard for explorers.[2]

Notes[]

  1. There is a contradiction in the origins of the plague brush: Monster Manual III has it as an extraplanar creature dwelling on the planes of other campaign settings, but for Eberron specifies that it is not extraplanar and instead has it in the Mournland. Despite this, the Eberron Campaign Setting places it in the plane of Dolurrh, implying it should be extraplanar after all.
  2. It is unclear if this is 30 feet from the surface or from the center of the already 30-foot-wide plague brush.
  3. This is stated to be a poison rather than a disease.
