Humans are the most populous race on the continents of Khorvaire and Sarlona. They are known for being ambitious, innovative, and diverse. A barbarian in the Demon Wastes and a Brelish noble are very different despite both being human.[4] For the last thousand years humans have been at the forefront of history on Khorvaire.[5]

Humans originated from the continent of Sarlona but migrated westward nearly 3,000 years ago, arriving in the region now known as the Lhazaar Principalities. Over the next century, humans spread across the face of Khorvaire establishing settlements that would later evolve into what are now known as the Five Nations.[4][5][6]

Dwarves are stoic. Elves are wise. Gnomes are cunning. And humans? They can’t make up their mind, so they try to be all of these things at once.
— Kessler[4]

Personality[]

Humans seem to be exceptionally adept and skilled at learning all manner of trades from blacksmith to anthropologist to fate-tempting adventurers. Humans demonstrate a proficiency in anything they set themselves to. While they don't meet the high standards of dwarven or elven craftsmanship, or the fortitude of the half-orcs or even the multifarious talents of the gnomes they more than make up for their lack of individual strength with a versatility that is second to none.[citation needed]

History[]

Humans are a relatively young race, originating on Sarlona thousands of years ago.[6] Much of ancient human history on Sarlona is lost or fragmented, but there are legends of various human kingdoms from that time, many ruled by sorcerer-kings. The kingdom of Aventus was an island kingdom off the coast of Sarlona, believed to have sunken into the depths of the ocean. Another ancient kingdom was the Empire of Uoraala, named after the nomad mercenaries who held power for 400 years.[7]

About 3000 years ago, the human Lhazaar led a voyage of ships from Rhiavhaar in eastern Sarlona westward to Khorvaire. Landing in the Lhazaar Principalities, this flotilla became the first human settlers on Khorvaire. While Lhazaar is popularly known as a brave explorer, scholars following the theories of Elias Onsten argue that this expedition was primarily made up of people who were unwanted by Sarlona, such as criminals or deserters.[7] Humans quickly spread across Khorvaire, often clashing with the goblinoid kingdoms that already existed, establishing settlements and forging new cultures independent of Sarlonan culture.[4][5][8] Several human families began to develop dragonmarks during this time, and the abilities granted by the marks gradually brought those families to prominence.[9]

About 2000 years ago, the first human nation, Karrnath, rose under the conquering armies of Karrn the Conqueror. Karrn fought both goblins and other humans in an attempt to conquer the continent, and succeeding in taking over modern-day Cyre, but three other human nations allied to stop further conquests. For the next thousand years, these nations became the primary nations on Khorvaire, known as the Five Nations. While led by humans, other races such as dwarves and gnomes also became part of these nations.[8][10]

A second wave of human migrants travelled east to Khorvaire from the Sarlonan region of Nulakesh, fleeing the Sundering and the rise of Riedra. These migrants landed in the Shadow Marches and the Demon Wastes. The few colonies that survived were in the Shadow Marches.[5][11]

Today, most humans on Khorvaire care little about the fact that Sarlona was their ancestral homeland, or even know that it was.[6][5] Humans remain the most numerous population on Sarlona, but with the rise of the Inspired and the Unity of Riedra on the continent, humans are no longer in positions of leadership.[5][6]

Dragonmarks[]

Five different dragonmarks appear on humans, although one also appears on half-orcs, far more than appear on any other race. The reasons for this are unknown. Some speculate that humans have some special meaning in the Draconic Prophecy, while others simply speculate this is because of the sheer number of humans.[5] The five marks are the following:

Related Races[]

A number of other races are of human origin. Half-elves and half-orcs both originate from humans procreating with elves and orcs respectively.[12] The kalashtar are a result of human monks bonding with dream spirits fleeing the plane of Dal Quor.[4] Aventi are believed to be descendants of the ancient kingdom of Aventus.[7]
