In 2004 The Eberron Campaign Setting introduced D&D fans to Keith Baker's brainchild the world of Eberron. Eberron is a campaign setting unique different from previous campaign settings such as The Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk and Dragonlance in that the fundamental structure of the world was different than typical fantasy, yet still held to some of the traditional fantasy elements. Eberron has been described as a gritty pulp noir taking its inspiration from Hollywood classics like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Mummy among others.

The Eberron campaign setting is also unique in that it is the result of a contest held by Wizards of the Coast to find a new campaign setting. It, among 10,000 other entries, won the hearts of the Wizards staff and thus was produced into an official campaign.

The book contains an overview of the world of Eberron introducing us to four new races, Warforged, Kalashtar, Shifter, and Changelings as well as updates older races for the world of Eberron. It also introduces the new class artificer as well as updating the classic classes for the world of Eberron. It gives a brief overview of the many nations and realms of Khorvaire and briefly glosses over other continents like Xen'Drik, Sarlona, Argonnessen, and Aerenal. It shows us a few new monsters specific to Eberron, the planes structure, magic, and wraps up with a short first level adventure titled The Forge of Fury.
