This article is about the creature, for the magazine, see Dragon (magazine).

Dragons are powerful winged creatures that live on the continent of Argonnessen and are one of the oldest and most powerful civilizations in Eberron.

Description[]

Dragons are powerful winged creatures that resemble reptiles. They tend to be four-legged with two wings and a tail. Their hides are scaly and their feet are clawed. Dragons grow more powerful and larger as they age. A wyrmling can be the size of a human, while the most ancient dragons can be the size of a large building.[1]

Dragon Subspecies[]

There are many different subspecies of dragons, usually distinguished by scale color. They include the following:

These dragons are considered to be part of two families. Metallic dragons consist of brass, bronze, copper, gold, and silver dragons; chromatic dragons consist of black, blue, green, red, and white dragons. Metallic dragons tend to live longer naturally, so the oldest and most influential dragons tend to be metallic.[4]

A dragon's alignment is not tied to the dragon's color. A gold or red dragon are both equally likely to be good or evil.[4][5][6] The color of a dragon mainly reflects the environment they prefer to live in and its power. For instance, gold dragons tend to be stronger and more powerful than a white dragon of similar age.[4]

Other creatures, like wyverns are considered to have draconic blood, but not be true dragons.[1]

Abilities[]

Dragons are known for their breath weapons, which produce different effects based on the type of dragon. They can use their teeth, claws, and tail as weapons. In addition to their physical capabilities, they are also often spellcasters. The older the dragon the more powerful these abilities tend to be.[1]

History[]

Creation Myth[]

According to myth, Eberron was created by three progenitor dragons, Eberron, Siberys, and Khyber. However, these powerful beings clashed over their creation and Khyber killed Siberys, before being defeated and imprisoned by Eberron. [7][8][9] The legend continues to say that dragons were created by the blood of Siberys falling on Eberron, creating different types of dragons from the mingling of blood with different biomes.[8]

Age of Demons[]

Along with the Couatl, dragons were one of the first races in Eberron, if not the first, and one of the first mortal beings.[8] In time, fiends rose up from the depths of Khyber and overran Eberron, scattering the dragons and ushering in the Age of Demons.[7] Eventually the dragons, led by the sage Ourelonastrix, uncovered the Draconic Prophecy, and used its knowledge to learn the weaknesses of the fiends.[10] For millennia, the dragons and couatl fought the creatures of Khyber in an epic world-spanning conflict, only ending with the sacrifice of almost the entire couatl race to bind the fiendish Overlords in Khyber.[7][11] This sacrifice left the dragons as the most powerful beings in Eberron.[12]

Age of Giants[]

After their victory over the Overlords, the dragons settled on the continent of Argonnessen. For awhile they expanded, until the stirrings of the Daughter of Khyber forced them to retreat back to Argonnessen.[12]

The dragons taught their magic to the giant civilizations of Xen'drik who used it in a war against the Quori. The giants ended the conflict by severing the connection between Dal Quor and Eberron.[12][7][11] However, when the giant civilization attempted to use their eldritch machines against their revolting slaves, the dragons intervened, destroying the giants and turning the continent of Xen'drik into a massive ruin.[13][7][11]

Subsequent Ages[]

Since the destruction of Xen'drik, the full force of the dragons has not been seen again. Flights of dragons have clashed with the elves of the nation of Aerenal on multiple occasions, but the Undying Court wielded power that has repulsed them.[14] When the elf line of Vol attempted to merge elf and dragon blood to create a greater Mark of Death, the elves and dragons worked together to exterminate the house.[15] Outside of these interactions with Aerenal, dragons would remain removed from the rest of Eberron and Khorvaire, except for the secret agents of The Chamber and rogue dragons. One such rogue dragon, Vvaraak, would teach druid magic to the Gatekeepers.[14][16]

With the discovery of dragonmarked races, dragons are especially interested in these marks, as they believe they may be tied to the Draconic Prophecy.[17]
